2.4 Order of precedence. Unless otherwise noted herein or in the contract, in the event
of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein, the text of this
document takes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws and
regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 First article. When specified (see 6.2), a first article sample shall be subjected to first
article inspection in accordance with 4.2.
3.2 Materials. Materials used for the pickup shall be in accordance with the
manufacturer s materials specifications. The materials shall be capable of meeting all of the
operational and environmental requirements specified herein (see 4.4.1).
3.2.1 Corrosion resistance. The pickup shall not be affected by exposure to military-type
fuels, lubricating oils, cleaning solvents, and salt water (see 4.4.1).
3.2.2 Potting. If potting is used within the pickup, the cross-sectional area exposed to the
external environment shall be kept to an absolute minimum (see 4.4.1).
3.2.3 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled,
recovered, or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent
possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance
requirements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs (see 4.4.1).
3.3 Design and construction. The pickup shall meet the following design parameters
(see 4.4.2):
a. Minimum wire diameter shall be 0.0711 millimeter (mm) [#41 American Wire Gauge
(AWG)].
b. Minimum unloaded or unstressed wall thickness shall be 0.508 mm [0.020 inch (in)].
This does not pertain to the thickness of the front face shield on blind ended pickups
which is limited only by standard design practice.
c. Minimum loaded, stressed or threaded wall thickness (taken from the maximum
inside diameter to the root of the external thread) shall be 0.762 mm (0.030 in).
